Top 15 Family Owned Businesses in the El Dorado Hills Area

I have lived in the El Dorado County area for almost 30 years! I have seen businesses come and go. I was recently talking with someone who does not live in the area and we discussed all the great local businesses this county has to offer. If you don't feel like driving over the county line, or you just like to keep your tax dollars in county, take a look at this list of the top fifteen family owned businesses in the El Dorado Hills area (in alphabetical order).

Aji - located in El Dorado Hills Town Center Plaza, this Japanese fusion restaurant has a little bit of everything - street food, noodles, sushi and salads. Check out their website for happy hour and events.
El Dorado Saloon  - now in combination with their other restaurant, Sauced (pizza), located right next door! In addtion to a delicious dinner and lunch menu, they offer live music, happy hour, and brunch on weekends starting at 9am.

Face In A Book - Wonderful bookstore in Town Center. They carry books for all ages, and hold a ton of events!
Folsom Palace - 2 locations, Folsom and El Dorado Hills (Raley's plaza). We are so lucky they decided to open in EDH as this is one of the best Chinese food restaurants you can find!
Fortune Garden - Another delicious Chinese restaurant in El Dorado Hills. Very affordable family dining!
Heavenly Donuts - This divine coffee and donut shop has been in Cameron Park forever! They offer donuts of all shapes and sizes!
Milestone - Seasonal and delicious! Something for everyone here - happy hour, brunch, and fun weekly events!
Papa Gianni's - Another Cameron Park favorite. If you are looking for the absolute best Italian food in the area, this is it. Voted Best Italian Restaurant in El Dorado County!

Sellands - Fun atmosphere and a great menu with a little bit of everything! I take clients here a lot because they offer many gluten free options!
Sign Banner Print - They do soccer banners, real estate signage, flyers, you name it! The owners are absolutely wonderful to work with and they are super fast and knowledgeable.
Taqueria El Dorado - The absolute BEST authentic Mexican food around! Fast service and the food is to die for!

36 Handles - All the feels of an authentic London pub! Open for lunch, dinner and happy hour! Visit their website for trivia and live music dates!
Train Station Coffee Shop - Don't be fooled by the name! This place has been around for years and offers the best breakfast around! Open 6-2 Daily for breakfast and lunch!
Under The Arbor - The cutest antique & home decor shop in the area. Family owned and the best part is, along with selling adorable antiques, they offer products from other local vendors - such as honey, jam, and homemade decor.

Wally's Pizza Bar - Pizza, cocktails, happy hour, live music, and breakfast on weekends from 9am-2!They honor local heroes (teachers, nurses, firefighters, police officers, and military) on Wednesdays with a free personal pizza.

  • Special Mention in Folsom: Snooks Chocolate Factory - Located in Historic Folsom and started by John Snook in 1963, this delicious candy shop offers homemade candy and of course chocolate, ice cream, and seasonal goodies! A great place to take visitors from out of town!

If you feel like taking a little extra time and heading up to Placerville, here are my top 5 favorite family owned places to eat:

Best Towns to Live in Southeast US

It has always been a dream of mine to live in the southern United States. Eventually I suppose we will move out of California, but I think my husband would prefer one of the mountain-y states in the northwest such as Montana, Idaho or Colorado.

Recently we took a trip and visited Charleston, South Carolina; Asheville, North Carolina; Savannah, Georgia and Nashville, Tennessee. I have to say out of those places we visited, Savannah was by far my favorite. It has that quirky small-town feel but it has the most cute and fun "downtown" area right on the river! Between the food, sites, and being able to walk almost anywhere, I would definitely move there in a heartbeat.

In case any of you feel the same way, check out Money Magazine's top 10 best places to live in the South. There is something for everyone! No, the weather will never be as good as California's, but these places have a lot of other great things to offer!

1. Allen, Texas

"The school system is also a big draw; the district has been ranked as one of the best in the state of Texas, and Allen students routinely outperform the state averages in both reading and math."

2. Franklin, Tennessee

3. Olive Branch, Mississippi
"Families love Olive Branch for its good schools, safe streets, and family-friendly activities, not to mention its affordability—the median home price is $185,092, and annual property taxes average $956 a year. "

4. Reston, Virginia

5. Concord, North Carolina

6. Rockville, Maryland
"One of Maryland’s oldest towns is also one of the state’s largest—and with low unemployment and an ultralow crime rate, it continues to attract newcomers. Many of its highly educated residents have jobs in the city’s expanding biomedical and technology industries; operations for Quest Software and Lockheed Martin are both here."

7. Fayetteville, Arkansas
"Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the area’s 36 parks, which offer hiking, fishing, and biking along almost 80 miles of trails and three lakes. The town’s lively arts and culture scene includes the 1,200-seat Walton Arts Center, which offers Broadway tours, music, comedy, and other performances."

8. St. Augustine, Florida

9. Vinings, Georgia

10. Mustang, Oklahoma
"The median sales price for a home in Canadian County, where Mustang is located, is $180,583, according to realtor.com—one of the lowest among the 2,400 spots MONEY evaluated for its Best Places to Live analysis. The town residents also enjoy a much higher median household income than other Oklahoma residents—$66,714, as compared to the state median of $47,913."

Add Curb Appeal to Your Home This Spring

You may have read my post about curb appeal from a couple years ago. If not, you can find it here. I am obsessed with ideas for creating a beautiful home! Curb appeal is one of the most important factors to selling your home. Or, if you are like me, you want to come home to a pretty house every day.

In addition to my previous ideas, I am sharing 10 ways to boost your home's curb appeal this spring.

1. Upgrade exterior lighting. Adding landscape lighting to the front yard can make a huge difference to the way your home looks at night - plus it will look great if your realtor takes twilight photos for the listing! Backyard lighting doesn't hurt either. Watch this video for a DIY project!

2. Replace the mailbox. So simple and easy! You can get mailboxes for relatively cheap at Home Depot or Lowes.

3. Install Shutters. One of my favorite upgrades to a home! The best part about them is you can choose whatever color and style you want. Choose them to go with the style of your home, or just your personal preference!

4. Add Greenery. Such a gorgeous way to easily add curb appeal to any home! You don't even necessarily need flowers - just add some beautiful green shrubs and plants.

5. Replace old windows. My sister recently did this in a home they bought and wow, what a difference! Buyers appreciate the upgrade PLUS they are so much more energy efficient.

6. Add a unique house number design. So many to choose from! Design a rustic one yourself, or you can order for less than $50 on Wayfair, which is what we did on hour house.

7. Add faux brick or stone. It's not super expensive, and even a small amount can make a huge difference! I love the style of the house below - it makes the house look like it's in Europe!

8. Install new garage doors. Not only do new doors look great and do wonders to the look of your home, installing new doors was listed in Money magazine last year as the #1 way to add value to your home. According to their article, "The all-in cost of replacing an outdated garage door with an upscale steel model boosts your home’s value by 98.3% of what it costs to install. In other words, a $3,470 garage door will really set you back only $60 when you put your house on the market."
These carriage style garage doors are my favorite!

9. Enhance the porch. One of my all-time favorites of Joanna Gaines - she is always upgrading the front porch on the homes she works on. It's such a beautiful way to add value and curb appeal to any home!

10. Wash the windows. This little thing can make such an impact! Clear, clean windows look so much nicer than seeing all the dirt and grime that has built up over the winter.

As usual, contact me with questions or input! I would love to hear your ideas or the way you have boosted your home's curb appeal.
